ABOUT LIFT FOR LIFE
LIFT FOR LIFE CHARITY MISSION STATEMENT
“Energizing and enhancing the lives of U.S. veterans and American youth through Powerlifting, Bodybuilding and Strength Sports Training, while teaching healthy nutritional principles.”
Depression and suicide have long been sad realities for too many people in the United States. The reason Lift for Life (L4L) was created to combat the precipitous rate at which this is rising, especially among our veterans and youth. Through the implementation of our advanced strength training and physique transformation programs, we seek to help members of the armed forces who have placed themselves in harm’s way in defense of our country. Often, they lack the resources to deal with the fallout of their service and our programs bring those veterans into an environment of self-improvement and provide a sense of accomplishment, in a non-judging gym culture that is clean, positive and supportive.
Likewise, our other focus is on young people who have barely begun their journey in life to choose positive paths forward. We seek to assist Youth through the same strength training and physique transformation programs we offer to Veterans, but adapted to age appropriate levels and skill sets for them to visualize and obtain reachable goals.
Sometimes, with both at-risk youth and veterans, addiction may be looming as a complicating factor. L4L’s view is that the endorphins that come from exercise are a much better thing to be addicted to, and can transform a positive “addiction” into a healthy lifestyle. Recent Harvard Medical studies have proven that pumping iron boosts an individual’s mood as well as the body’s strength and appearance. Other studies show measurable improvements in circulatory and respiratory health, leading to greater oxygen exchange and increased sense of well-being.
Our team of instructors provides measurable milestones to trainees by providing them a prescribed routine, positive feedback on weight training progress, and a multi-generational group of people who recognizes their worth. Our founders have seen firsthand how this kind of striving and physical transformation increases self-esteem and emotional resilience and want to continue to touch the lives of as many people as possible.
We seek others who will join with us as we build this organization; as participants, as contributors, and as fellow human beings.
FACTS OF URGENCY
For Veterans, much media attention and information has been distributed to make citizens aware of the suicide epidemic, but despite increased awareness and discussion of the problem, the rate stands relatively unchanged at an average of 17 veterans per day; which is nearly double that of the general population. A recent federal investigation also found that the money and effort expended by the Veterans Administration on suicide prevention outreach dropped significantly in 2017 and 2018, despite it being touted by the past two VA secretaries as their top clinical priority. If L4L reduces that grim statistic by even one veteran, our efforts are worth it, but we know can do so much more than that…
L4L is open to contact from Veteran Support Groups, friends and family of veterans, as well as veterans themselves.
Suicide rates for teenage youth, and especially among teenage males, is surging. Last year, the U.S. suicide rate reached a 20-year high and is the second leading cause of death between the ages of 10-24; more than cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza and chronic lung disease combined. Each day in our nation, there are an average of 3069 attempts at suicide by young people in grades 9-12. If combined with grades 7 & 8, the numbers would be even higher; a shocking and tragic statistic.
As Oren Miron, a research associate at Harvard Medical School notes, “It really is an unprecedented surge. You can go back decades and you won’t find such a sharp increase.” L4L’s looks to work with high school teachers, counselors and coaches in our area and want these individuals to contact us about students and ex-students who could benefit from our program. We want to be a resource to parents, foster programs and churches – anyone who comes into contact with kids who need a new kind of focus and inspiration to turn their lives around.
Our founders have seen firsthand how this kind of striving and physical transformation increases self-esteem and emotional resilience and want to continue to touch the lives of as many people as possible. We seek others who will join with us as we build this organization; as participants, as contributors, and as fellow human beings.
HOW DONATIONS ARE USED
L4L is about providing the highest quality and experienced coaches to educate and oversee our programs. This is where the majority of your donation is expended. Although most of the L4L coaches provide their time at a discounted rate, their expertise is not free. Many drive in from surrounding areas to work with our participants and their time is most certainly valuable.
